The Renal Treatment Centre is a specialised unit which caters for children with all facets of renal failure. The unit caters for children requiring both acute and long term haemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis, plasma exchange as well as other renal replacement therapies. The unit also cares for children that are undergoing day only renal surgical procedures and provide both pre and post operative care to these children. Renal transplantation is also catered for with transplant workups and follow up of children undertaken within the unit.
As well as inpatient services the RTC also provides outpatient clinics for children with renal conditions or who have had renal transplants.
The Renal Treatment Centre provides a multidisciplinary approach to meet the needs of children and their families with all aspects of their treatment. The unit works very closely with Medical Staff, Child Life Therapists, Occupational Therapists, Social Workers, Dietitans, School Teachers and Physiotherapists in order to achieve this goal.
Rostering Practices
The Renal Treatment Centre offers 8 hour shifts. The rostering involves a mix of self rostering and negotiation. The shifts are as follows:
- Morning Shift: 0800-1630
- Evening Shift: 1200-2030
Educational Opportunities
The Renal Treatment Centre offers many educational opportunities within the unit as well as the ability to attend conferences and workshops in order to enhance professional development. We have a Nurse Practitioner and a Clinical Nurse Specialist who provide an extensive educational program for staff that focus' on all aspects of caring for the children and their families within the unit.
