The Surgical Unit

The Surgical Unit, located on level 2 of The Children's Hospital at Westmead is a 36 bed ward dedicated to surgery, trauma, rehabilitation and orthopaedics. The Unit works under the multidisciplinary team model with family focussed care. The Unit has a great environment with new refurbished facilities including our own tutorial/education room.

Nursing staff work amongst paediatric surgical patients with high acuity. Professionalism and the standard of care on the ward is high. Nurses are offered educational experiences and professional development opportunities. Some of these include advanced practice skills, trauma and Disaster training (this unit is the designated Disaster Unit).

Management and Support staff

The Surgical Unit has a Nurse Manager, two full time Clinical Coordinators, Nurse Educator and a number of Clinical Nurse Consultants and Advanced Practice Nurses who work closely with the Surgical Unit team. Clinical Nurse Consultants include Orthopaedic, Rehabilitation, Stoma Therapy, Trauma and Surgical, Advanced Practice Nurses in Orthopaedics.

Rostering Practice

The Surgical Unit operates a rotating self-rostering system. Shifts are flexible with requests made on the self-roster system catered for as best they can. The roster is available 2 weeks prior to commencement.

Education assistance

All new staff members are preceptored by an experienced staff member to ensure thorough orientation. An orientation package is also given. The Surgical Unit encourages and supports staff in maintaining their own professional development.

Professional development

The Surgical Unit has a number of career pathways, including a clinical path, an educational path and management. Nursing staff have the support and opportunity to relieve in these positions.
